CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Anwyn’s hand tightened on the grab bar on the flyer as it shot straight upward, the gravity compensators not quite keeping up.

“Targeting incoming missile,” Mark announced while focusing on his weapons board.

Anwyn discovered she hated being a passenger in a flyer during combat. It gave her nothing to do except hang on and worry. She had confidence in Mark’s and Drew’s skills, but it was still difficult to sit back and remain silent. She understood they needed to focus on evading incoming fire, so she bit her lip and said nothing.

From what she could see, both craft were under attack by a pair of unmarked flyers. She saw the explosion as Mark’s countermeasures destroyed the first missile, but another was close behind it.

Drew muttered something about “Tired of being a target.” Veraz heard him and awkwardly leaned forward from his rear seat. “Then let’s take the fight to them.”

Drew liked that plan because the entire flyer was nearly upside down a moment later as he took it through a loop and came down behind the attacker. Mark got off two shots before the enemy flyer jinked out of range, but it trailed a cloud of smoke as it retreated.

“Drew, turn! Mark, take it down!” Veraz ordered. “We need to know who that is.”

That was all Drew needed to pick up speed and pursue the enemy flyer. Its damage made it unable to maneuver as well as Drew, and he rapidly got their flyer in targeting range again.

“Keep it in one piece?” Mark asked.

“Try to, yes.”

Mark didn’t reply. He targeted the flyer’s stabilizer fins rather than the engine. Drew took them up and dove at the flyer while Mark targeted one of the weapons banks. The flyer dropped from the sky.

“We’ve got them,” Drew announced as he followed them down.

Suddenly, the flyer ahead of them exploded in a ball of fire. Drew pulled up sharply but was unable to avoid the explosion completely.

“That’s going to damage the paint job,” Mark drawled.

Anwyn thought she heard Shir-ella let out an amused snort from the other side of the rear compartment.

“Did you hit them?” Veraz asked.

“I’d stopped firing. Maybe the engine damage was worse than it looked. The first hit was the only thing that could have caused an explosion like that.”

“Too late to worry about it now,” Veraz muttered, obviously annoyed at losing the chance to capture whoever attacked them.

“How are Rehan and Bilai doing? Do they need help?” Shir-ella asked.

Drew pivoted their flyer so they could see the second attacker streaking away from the Hrithain. Bilai fell farther behind as she attempted to pursue the second unmarked attacker. Bilai’s flyer was trailing smoke and slowing down.

“Give it up,” Veraz sent over the implant, a message he knew would reach Rehan. “You’re too damaged to catch them.”

The Hrithain got off one more shot, but the distance was too great, and the enemy flyer dodged it easily.

“Dammit, I wanted to catch one of them,” Veraz complained.

“Let’s check out whatever remains from that explosion,” Drew suggested.
